Welcome to FutureCoast Youth – Creative Collaborations for a Changing Climate

FutureCoast Youth aims to empower young people – the generation who will be most affected by climate change, but who are often given the least voice – to imagine and explore their responses to climate change, through participatory storytelling, play and performance.

FutureCoast Youth is a collaborative partnership between University of Brighton media researchers (Julie DoyleHelen Kennedy and Sarah Atkinson), Onca Centre for Arts and Ecology (project managed by Persephone Pearl) and Dorothy Stringer School (Brighton, UK). It extends the FutureCoast project developed by US games designer, Ken Eklund: an online digital storytelling project which asks audiences to imagine and create voicemails from climatically changed futures.

FutureCoast Youth builds on this participatory imaginative premise to bring climate change to young people in Brighton. Through a series of workshops (facilitated by Keith Ellis and Jack Darach) that use play, storytelling, ideas of time and of how to relate climate change to the everyday, project leaders are working with Dorothy Stringer’s Environmental Science GCSE students to explore their understandings of – and responses to – climate change. FutureCoast Youth will culminate in a Young People’s Climate Conference at Onca, with students presenting their ideas in role as a conference delegation from the future, to coincide with the UN Climate Convention, COP21 (Paris, December 2015).

Please follow our activities (and feel free to comment on them) as we work through the project in the lead up to COP21. FutureCoast Youth is proud to be a part of ArtCOP21– the global festival of cultural activity on climate change.

The project has been funded by the University of Brighton’s Community University Partnership Programme (CUPP) as a successful recipient of their Seed Fund Award. We are also very grateful to Dr Dan Danahar and Mr Rob Sandercock at Dorothy Stringer School for being so positive about the partnership and enabling it to happen.
